Life in Korea - Convenient Store Goodies

There is one good thing about the handful of convenient stores in Korea. Located in all areas which include popular tourist areas and hidden alleys, these convenient stores can be the biggest life saviors. Not only are they opened late hours, heck 24 hours, it is the one spot to go to for cheap goodies (including amusement parks and other family places Americans would raise the price at). They offer all kinds of daily necessities, making traveling and everyday life that much easier. A few of the more popular convenient stores in Korea are Family Mart, Buy the Way, GS 25, CVS, and 7-11 (but its nothing like the ones back at home).

Although the name varies, they generally all have the same goodies inside. Depending on the size and location of the store, you may be able to find more goodies than in other locations. Basic toiletries like any corner store can be found: tissues, pens, toothbrushes, cups, utensils, and a handful of packaged foods that can be cooked in the comfort of your own home (spam, rice, cereal, sauces and such). Moving on to the more important goodies in these convenient stores is the food of course!

For starters, Koreans love breads and baked goods so you can always find some sort of pastry for those who are in a rush. You can find the weirdest kinds sometimes which makes me wonder if there is anything that Koreans can NOT come up with? Although most packaged pastries we at room temperature, some stores offer warm breads fill with red bean jams and such.

One of the more popular goodies to have is the ramen of course. There is hot water available to cook up a bowl of ramen. The best part is being able to upgrade your ramen with sausages, eggs, fish cakes, and the many other microwaveables that are available. Each convenient store has their own microwave that is ready to be used so you can be as creative as possible. You'll be amazed at what you can find!

For those who aren't looking for a full on meal with their ramen can pick up a kimbap. There are cheap triangle kimbaps that are less than a dollar or even a two dollar roll! In addition to kimbaps there are cold cut sandwiches with all kinds of flavors and even half half selections. Yeap, half ham and cheese sandwich, half spicy chicken, my all time favorite to get the best of both worlds.

Looking for warm goodies? There are microwaveable burgers that are in the bag. Simply microwave and grub. Talk about fast food! They also offer hot dogs, pizzas, and a whole bunch of random microwaveables that you can consume within minutes. If you're looking for a healthy option, many stores offer fruits and such. It is definitely the place to go for a quick, cheap meal.

The one thing that the States should adapt from the Korean convenient stores is the warm fridge. Yes! The warm fridge. Ever go to the store and just want a hot drink that is not powdered or is not as fancy as a Starbucks cup of coffee or tea? There's an invention here in Korea that keeps drinks warm. This is not limited to coffees, teas, vitamin drinks and juices. You name it, they have it. It's a high controlled temperature box that keeps bottle and canned drinks warm. Usually this fridge is by the microwaves, but it differs from store to store. There is even some open fridges that are fancy and have different temperature rows. One row of coffees may be cold whereas the other is warm. This is probably my one obsession with Korean convenient stores other than a low priced lunch. There's nothing better than being able to pick up a can of hot tea to soothe a sore throat as easy as 1-2-3.

Moral of the story is do not underestimate what you can find in a convenient store. You'll be surprised how you can live off of your corner store for a week of travel. Be sure to be health conscious of what you are consuming though. After all, these packaged goods have been sitting around for a while and they must be packaged in a certain way so there is a high concentration of sodium. Of course a meal a week wouldn't hurt, unless you're dieting!

Pick your type of soft serve, your toppings and the exact amount that you wish. Simply serve up to your tasting and pay by weight. With so many choices, it can be difficult to narrow it down to your ultimate favorite, but there's nothing wrong with having 16 different favorites! With so many locations across NY, you can definitely find yourself stopping by.

Product Review - Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer

I have recently started to become obsessed with Hourglass, especially with the No. 2 Brush. Since then, I've been looking into their products and trying to get a better grasp of those that are good for individuals with psoriasis. I then stumbled upon the Veil Mineral Primer which is rated to be the number one selling primer in Sephora. Why? Because it's pretty darn amazing. I used to be obsessed with the Cover FX Clear Prep Primer and the whole line in general, but Hourglass has definitely changed my life.

The primer helps for those with psoriasis because its able to minimize the cakey look that occurs when having to pile on makeup. One exciting factor, like the Cover FX Clear Prep Primer, is that it works with your skin as a medication to help create flawless skin. The Veil Mineral Primer reduces shine by absorbing oil and soften your skin. The best part is that it is one of the very few primers with SPF that is compatible with my skin which helps me save time on an extra lotion and it is water resistant.

A primer with so many effects that lasts all day is definitely worth making the investment. I've heard pretty good reviews on the product before, but I am glad that I was able to make my own input on the item itself.

Restaurant Review - Joe's Shanghai

Joe’s Shanghai
9 Pell Street #1
New York, NY 10013

The first Joe’s Shanghai originated in Flushing, NY back in 1995. It has made its way to Chinatown and uptown, New York, even across the world in Japan. Although the appearance of the restaurant is not the most appealing, the food is absolutely delicious. Pricing is a little higher than other Shanghai restaurants, but this is the absolute tourist attraction.

Regardless of the time during the day, expect to wait for seats. If you are traveling in a small group, expect to share your table with others. Don’t worry about having additional foods added to your bill, they’re good at keeping track of that. If you’re a first timer, the must order at Joe’s Shanghai is the Pork and Crab Soup Dumpling of course. If you are allergic to crab, go for plain pork, but I think this is the combination is best soup dumpling I have had. A few of my other favorites are the Scallion Pancake and the Shanghai Rice Cakes.

The next time you’re in the area, forget about the dinky restaurant appearance and give it a try, you won’t regret it. Joe’s Shanghai kept in their roots of traditional Shanghai food, not altering their dishes to please a particular crowd.

Story of My Life - New Jersey

So being back in Jersey City was definitely breathtaking. I got to see the snow fall where my family still lives after all these years, walk along the Hudson where our house hovers and breathe the air that I longed for this past year in Korea. There have been many changes to the area, mostly upgrades, but the best part is being able to still find the same spots that I longed for since moving to Korea.

One of my ultimate favorite breakfast spots is Wonder Bagels, on Sip Ave, but of course there's one right by my house on 440 and Danforth now. Wonder Bagels bakes up the freshest breads and pastries to be served everyday. They cater to a pool of workers and attract the noses and taste buds of all ages. Nothing explains the texture and smell of the classic bagel with cream cheese at Wonder Bagels! Everyone knows how hard it is to get a good bagel in Korea so being able to get an EVERYTHING bagel was amazing. Toasted with cream cheese to perfection.

In addition to great bagels, Filipino food in Jersey City is amazing. The food is literally just home cooked with different dishes everyday at my two favorite places: The Philippine Bread House by Dickinson High School on Newark Ave and Rowena's on West Side Ave. There is just so much to choose from with fresh breads, BBQ skewers, and of course stewed goodies.

Another well recognized location in the are is Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken. Carlo's Bakery always has a line for the famous fourth generation baker, Buddy on Cake Boss of TLC. Recognized for his funny goofy attitude and great Italian pastries, locals and tourists wait on lines that can be two blocks long just to sample his deliciousness.

Being back home meant that I had to take a visit to Rutgers, where a lot of memories of food are held. If you are familiar with the area, the number one thing that stands out to you is fat sandwiches from the Grease Trucks. Of course, there are a ton of Grease Trucks now, but nothing beats the original RU Hungry? That is the one place to get a fat sandwich (sandwich stuffed with all sorts of fried goodies and topped with a sauce) from. I am definitely considering bringing this concept to Korea just because it is AMAZING.

A few of the other popular locations in the Rutgers area includes Noodle Gourmet (for Chinese food), Thomas' Sweets (for ice cream and chocolates), and my ultimate favorite, I's Cafe (for bubble tea). Iris makes the best bubble tea in town and is always offering deals and discounts. She beats out the others by mixing all sorts of different teas and flavors together. She's not scared to experiment and is the most friendliest boba bar tender I have met thus far! Nothing beats a quick conversation with a tea specialist that pretty much remembers your favorites, even after all these years of not visiting!

One last location in the Jersey area that is worth mentioning is Sushi Palace, an all you can eat sushi buffet. The difference of this sushi buffet compared to others is that they allow you to order everything fresh rather having it sit out for a while. The best part is that Sushi Palace does not limit that things that you can order. Most all you can eat sushi restaurants only allows for you to order an unlimited amount of sushi, but Sushi Palace includes appetizers, sushi, sashimi, and desserts! Nothing beats a full-on unlimited amount of Japanese food.

Although many may not be a fan of the Jersey area and don't believe it to be recognized for much, is is one place to take a visit if you are in the New York area for the well-recognized foods and shopping. You sure will be able to save on luxury items because of the difference in tax! I sure stacked up on that prior to coming back to Korea!

My Current Obsession - Hourglass Foundation/Blush Brush No. 2

Rated the world's number one brush, it is a must have for all. This multipurpose brush allows you to save time switching from brush to brush and cleaning. It allows for you to go from wet to dry which means starting with a primer, continuing to a liquid foundation and finishing with contouring and highlighting with blush or bronzer. The best thing about the brush is the PETA-friendly, soft bristles which are made from high synthetic fibers, perfect for those with the most sensitive skin that are looking for maximum coverage.

Priced at an average of $60, this was one investment that was an enormous splurge. On a good note, for a brush that is so expensive, it is backed with an 8 year warranty. Yes, 8 years. So if the brush and bristles start to fall apart, be sure to get that examined and save your receipt! Because it is such a handy and durable brush, spray cleaning after use and weekly shampooing is not needed, but recommended. If you haven't gotten your splurge on for this brush yet, I do recommend doing so!

Sweet Tooth Satisfaction - Momofuku Milk Bar

Momofuku Milk Bar, one of the quickest spots of the Momofuku chain to get food is known for their dessert and sweet goods. With a twist on every traditional dessert of pies, cookies, cakes, and even cookies, it is a must visit location to try one of the best snacks in town. Momofuku Milk Bar is known for their unique take on every dessert named possible. One of the dishes that you can find in the Momofuku restaurants is the cake truffles which are bite-sized balls of cakes.
My one recommendation to make is the crack pie and candy pie. It may be a bit too sweet for a lot of people, especially the candy pie, but it is literally a pie version of a snickers plus more! It is something that I just can't get enough of, but can't finish in one sitting either. There are a lot more favorites of the locals, but there's always something to try at Momofuku Milk Bar.

The best part of the small shop is that you are able to make orders online. For those who are not within proximity to the store, simply make your order and have it shipped out. For others who are making a big order or want a custom cake, be sure to order online for pick up. Skip all the lines and the many tourists that are waiting around for these goodies!

Sweet Tooth Satisfaction – Wafels and Dinges

I’ve been hyped about the Wafels & Dinges Food Truck since I seen it parked in the St Marks area. With a number of trucks around the New York area, this sweet and quick snack is a sweet tooth satisfaction to all. With the mini wafelini starting at a measly $3, this is a cheap eat. I definitely recommend getting a $5 wafel because you will crave for more!

I'm not going to lie, I definitely miss the truck, regardless of how famous Korea is known for their fresh waffles. Nothing beats this truck, not even the other trucks in town. Apaprently, Wafels & Dinges is rated the number one food truck in the city. Why? Because it's just that damn good.

I ordered the brussels wafel topped with caramel and the spekuloos spread, specialty of Wafels and Dinges. The wafel is cooked to its perfection, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It was so good that I did not want to share even though I was the one who suggested sharing. A friend and I literally fought for the bites and that never happens. He doesn’t have a sweet tooth at all, but this is a true exception. Definitely says a lot and I am sad that I waited so long to try the Wafels and Dinges truck!

You can always follow them on Twitter and try out their Twitter challenges for a free wafel !

Sweet Tooth Satisfaction - Carlos Bakery

Carlo's Bakery of Hoboken, New Jersey, is known for the show Cake Boss on TLC. Furthermore, the Italian bakery has been around since 1970, famous for the freshly baked Italian baked goods and Buddy Valastro, fourth generation baker.
Carlo's Bakery is a short walk, located two blocks from the Hoboken Path station along the main road of Washington. When walking to the bakery, you can barely miss it because there is practically always a line outside, many times reaching the next block. I definitely got lucky today with just small a line inside the bakery. The best part for locals is being able to skip the line and ordering goods, be sure to have your ID ready to show for though.

Because there is so much hype behind the bakery, I was definitely excited to try it. I admit the cakes are extremely appealing and looks delicious, but I am a bit disappointed with the taste. I was warned prior to entering the bakery. I decided to take the risk anyway because I was already there and didn't have to wait in line.

For a bakery in Hoboken, pricing may seem to be a little high, eight bucks for a cupcake, brownie and a cookie. I am definitely a fan of icing on a cupcake, but Carlo's Bakery uses whipped cream, with the exception of beautifully designed cupcakes. I ordered the chocolate peanut butter cupcake which has very minimal peanut butter taste other than the peanut butter cup that is placed on top. I feel that the baked goods are average, but everyone goes because of the hype of the show. I have yet to try the Italian pastries and I highly doubt I will return if there is a line just to try their other baked goods.

Sweet Tooth Satisfaction - Ceci Cela

Ceci Cela, a bakery known for its croissants is baking up all things delicious starting as early as 6:30. Serving the early morning breakfast crowds, afternoon snackers as well as the night time desserts, Ceci Cela is open all day into the night providing French goodies for every meal, every hour of the day. With so many baked delicatessens to choose from, it is easy to find something that caters to the taste buds of all.
The most recognized croissants are the traditional, sweet and salty ones that are all stuffed with a mix of  vegetables, meats, and even cheese. My ultimate favorite are the sweeter ones which include almond, chocolate, and the original glazed. In addition to the fluffy croissants, there are a handful of cakes, tarts, cookies, macarons, and all that feeds the heart of New York.

Sweet Tooth Satisfaction - Rice to Riches

Rice To Riches, a famous rice pudding spot in Nolita is known for their take on the traditional American dessert, infusing all sorts of flavors including fruits and sweet savories that you probably would never think of. This is the perfect place for those who are a big fan of the rice pudding dessert. With about 20 flavors in store, it leaves you wondering what else they can come up with next!

A serving of the rice pudding can be a bit pricey, over $7 for a small bowl of fresh rice pudding which can be enough to share between two. For those who are looking for a smaller and less pricier size, you can go for the packaged rice pudding. The smallest size is for a price of $4, but the packaging is not as nice as the colorful bowls for fresh rice pudding.

I have to admit I am not a big fan of rice pudding, but I love the concept of the dessert. It is definitely nice to have a twist to the traditional goody that is extremely popular amongst many. I know my friends go yonkers for this goody and die for the day they can pay a visit to Rice to Riches.

Sweet Tooth Satisfaction - Chikalicious

Chikalicious
203 East 10th Street
New York, NY 10009
(212) 475-0929

I admit that the website does not provide the most appealing look for this dessert bar, but trust me when I say it is worth going it. It can be a little confusing when arriving at Chikalicious because there are two locations that are directly across the street from one another. There is a small bakery like store where you can order desserts to go and to enjoy in their extremely small and cozy cafe where reservations are not needed.

There is then an upgraded dessert bar across the street with a black and white interior, more updated and classic look. This is where you must make reservations to ensure seating because trust me when I say, it is worth visiting. With a different menu everyday, Chikalicious Japanese chefs puts a twist to the traditional dessert goodies, infusing and pairing with all different kinds of fruits and pastries that is extremely unexpected.

The one recommendation that I have to make is the Brown Sugar Panna cotta. It is amazing and literally melts in your mouth. Desserts are extremely small in size, most guests order a plate each and share between the group, I do admit that I would have probably ordered the whole menu if I didn't have to make a few more stops at other dessert locations in the area. Nonetheless, it is worth the price that you pay for each plating, although it is considered to be a bit more pricey for many.

The environment is set for a night atmosphere, after a romantic dinner. I suggest it as a spot to go to after a date, but there is no harm in going with a few friends. Be sure to make reservations because it is a small location and hours of operation is from late 3pm into the night, catering to guests of the nightlife.

Sweet Tooth Satisfaction - Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery

Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery
126 Rivington Street #1
between Allen and Essex
New York, NY 10002
(212) 995-1960

A place right off of Chinatown for cheap cupcakes is definitely within my budget. I am so used to paying three bucks for a cupcake that Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery makes me feel like I’m in heaven. These cupcakes are the perfect size for someone with a sweet tooth and the best thing about it is that the actual cake flavor doesn’t outweigh the icing. I have had so many cupcakes where both the cake and icing is so sweet that it’s a battle and I usually give up on the icing.

The icing actually compliments the cupcakes, making it an absolute delicious treat. The one thing I am not a fan of is that some is topped with a whipped cream-like icing. I’m an icing kind of girl so I love the sweet taste. Either way, the hidden Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery is a must visit for their $1.75 cupcakes and $21 for a dozen. They also specialize in other cheap goodies, but I’m definitely a cupcake girl and recommend having the original vanilla and the sassy red velvet which is topped with a chocolate icing rather than the traditional cream cheese.

In addition to the amazing cupcakes, the one thing that many locals are obsessed with is the pudding. My ultimate favorite is the chocolate chip which has pieces of chocolate chip, pudding, cream, as well as soft bread mixed in. Cups start at $2.50 and totally worth the splurge of the diet. Sharing the fridge, there are mini cheesecakes which I am not a big fan of. Reason for that is because these small cheesecake poppers contain a mixture of bread, much like the Korean style. At the very least, there are a handful of other cheap goodies: cookies and drinks to make up for the cheesecake!
